Face the Music

And some of the music is pretty and some of it is not so pretty.

She looks like she is smirking at me in this picture.  How dare her!

Does this face look familiar to you?

Wow, I can already see quite a few mistakes.

I am doing these daily drawings so I have to critique myself or else I

wouldn't learn anything but just for the record, I am very

pleased with how this turned out.

1.  I got one eye way lower than the other--cardinal sin!

It is easier to see to me in the picture below.

Color on this one is a little better.

2.  Also, one eye is more round.

3.  AND one eye has longer lashes.

4.  And one eye has more eyeliner--

5.  Left eye (looking at picture) is way more smeary--that would be okay if I had made them both smeary and the rest of the face matched.

I'm fairly pleased with the nose and mouth.  The picture I took this from had

her right nostril way more prominent.  If I were doing it over since it is a straight on shot, I might make the left nostril match a little more--not fully, but a little--

Wanted to compare sides of the face and which I liked better--

Don't like those long lashes--they make her look really fakey--

Have you figured out who she resembles just a little bit?

Seemed like when I placed this vignette around her, she became a little more recognizable.  If you said Madonna, you are right.

I looked around on the internet until I found a picture of someone with very distinctive features.  Those are a little easier to draw.

Well, hope you enjoyed my little art show and would love to see some of your drawings. Maybe this will inspire you to sit down with a piece of paper and a pencil AND A BIG ERASER and have some fun.  What is the worst that can happen--you ruin a piece of paper??!!

blue dream girl

I am going to TRY to paint a face a day. I figure that is the only way I will ever make improvement. Here is today's face--I took her to Photoshop and did a little work on her there with the lettering and the swirly-dos.

My First Self-Portrait

This is the picture I used to paint from--

I changed the picture to sepia so you could see the lights and darks--

This is my first ever attempt at a self-portrait.

I am taking an online watercolor "faces" course and this is what I painted tonight.

I used a picture of me taken 48 years ago.

I can see a likeness.

Unfortunately it is in not in Picture 1--(see picture 1 below)

Wonder why I was so light and free on the right side of my face and so heavy-handed on the left--??

However, what is so interesting is this--the right side (Picture 1) doesn't really look too much like me.

The left cartoonish side is very much like me.

By the way, I added a touch of pink but we were supposed to paint this all in one color--seeing how many variations of that one color we could use within the picture--teaches you about lights and darks--

I see that I was very kind to myself--made the face thinner--do you see that my eyebrows are turned the wrong way?? (in my real picture above)--they are fairly thin now in my old age but they were very thick at the end that was supposed to be thin and vice versa--not being critical--I actually liked them okay BUT I didn't get them right in the portrait and I thought I was making them so heavy where my actual eyebrow was heavy BUT I didn't!

This is picture 1--wow!  I love the shading right under her eye--don't ask me how I did that--I think the water and color just did it!

The good news is this--I think the watercolor course is a good one--the picture above is one I painted last night before I started the watercolor class today.  I think I can tell a difference.

The picture I painted last week of the girl was acrylic--quite different than painting watercolor--you can let acrylics dry and paint over them--

teeth are hard--I've got to learn a lot more about teeth--

Psalm 8

A David Psalm

 ¹ God, brilliant Lord, yours is a household name.

 ² Nursing infants gurgle choruses about you;
      toddlers shout the songs
   That drown out enemy talk,
      and silence atheist babble.

 ^3-4 I look up at your macro-skies, dark and enormous,
      your handmade sky-jewelry,
   Moon and stars mounted in their settings.
      Then I look at my micro-self and wonder,
   Why do you bother with us?
      Why take a second look our way?

 ^5-8 Yet we've so narrowly missed being gods,
      bright with Eden's dawn light.
   You put us in charge of your handcrafted world,
      repeated to us your Genesis-charge,
   Made us lords of sheep and cattle,
      even animals out in the wild,
   Birds flying and fish swimming,
      whales singing in the ocean deeps.

 ⁹ God, brilliant Lord, your name echoes around the world.
