Consolation of Israel!

Remember the story of Simeon in the Bible?  He had long awaited the birth of the Messiah and had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before seeing the Lord's Christ.  Here is the story from Luke 2.
When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord  (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”),  and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”
Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him.
It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.
Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

"Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
You may now dismiss your servant in peace.
For my eyes have seen your salvation,
Which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
A light for revelation to the Gentiles
And the glory of your people Israel."

The picture above is of one of my favorite puzzles that our family has worked at Christmas time--Simeon holding baby Jesus and giving heart-rending thanks for the Messiah that he knew had come.

A few years ago, my youngest son and his wife started talking about adopting a child. Because of the wait they knew was coming, they called the child Simeon referring to the story in the Bible. For various reasons, their wait for this long-hoped for child ran into several years. Christmas night as Andrea and I were cooking, I asked her if they had given up on their hoped for child. She said, "No, the dream is still there." The ache in me for that new descendant and grandchild had been getting stronger and stronger.

On the day we celebrated Christmas, December 26th, after all the gifts and stockings had been opened, an envelope was handed to me. In it was the following poem.

Af first I started crying because of the reference to "the legacy of prayer." Then as I read the last two lines, I realized that something wonderful was being told to me just as something wonderful was told to Simeon so long ago.  I was to have another descendant--a long-awaited one--one that would not come from our bloodline but our heartline.

Isn't that just like God?  To give an uncontainable gift after the month of concentrated prayer for our descendants?  He birthed the month of prayer in my spirit--He has known forever the identity of our new family member--He waited heavily with the knowledge our whole family rejoiced in, especially our only grandson among seven grandchildren.  Naturally, he is hoping for a boy and voiced the desire to be a role model for him.

My kids always say, "It's not Christmas until Mom has cried." Well, they got a boatload of tears from me this year. We have a boatload of love to give a precious child and that child's biological family for sharing him or her with us.

I prayed several weeks before Christmas that this would be our most meaningful Christmas ever, that God would be glorified and magnified. He answered my prayer in the wildest of ways. To God be the glory--great and mighty and awesome and uncontainable things He has done!

I'm in love and can't wait to meet the one I am in love with! We are probably looking at a few months, but it could be sooner. Please join us in prayer that God in His wisdom will bless our family with the child He knows needs us and the one whom we need.

Happy New Year!

Preparation for the Journey

Day 30
"'Build up, build up, prepare the road! Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people.' For this is what the high and lofty One says--he who lives forever, whose name is holy: 'I live in a high and holy place, but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.'" Isaiah 57:14,15

Jennifer's prayer: "Remove the obstacle of pride from the lives of my descendants. Create in them hearts that are meek and receptive to Your Spirit. Revive them according to Your Word."~Jennifer Kennedy Dean

My prayer:  O Father, I agree with Jennifer's prayer and ask you to give me and my descendants hearts that are meek.  Break and remove generational strongholds of pride from the spiritual DNA of my family and my husband's family.  Show us and our descendants what it really means to be contrite and lowly in spirit.

I long for the sin of pride to be removed from my family, from our hearts, our minds, our thoughts, our actions and for us to be filled with the contrition of Jesus.

When I started this journey thirty days ago, I never dreamed what would be at the end of it.  I will share it with you tomorrow.

Where Can I Go and Meet with God?

Day 29

"As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?" Psalm 42:1-2

Jennifer's prayer: "Lord, make Yourself irresistible to my descendants, that they will thirst for you."~Jennifer Kennedy Dean

My prayer: "Lord, this has long been one of my very favorite scriptures. I know that You place the thirst within for the things of Yourself and I love thirsting for You. I love the search, the running hard after You and the feeling that comes when my thirst is quenched.

I pray that You will place this thirst in my descendants. I pray that their souls will never be satisfied with anything but You. Teach them how to search and follow hard after You O God, the Living God. Show them where they can meet with You. Show them that the true meeting place is where their desperation and thirst collide with Your light and love."

Let them never forget how empowering Your love and grace are when we encounter them in Your fullness."

Following Hard

Day 28

"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws." Ezekil 36:26-28

Jennifer's prayer: "Lord, move my descendants to follow You."~~Jennifer Kennedy Dean

My prayer: "Lord God, I pray that Your Holy Spirit would convict my descendants of sin, show them the Way, Jesus, and lead them to follow all of your laws." Give them a tender heart of flesh, guard and guide them all the days of their lives."

Soul Satisfaction

Day 27

"You still the hunger of those you cherish; their sons have plenty, and they store up wealth for their children." (Psalm 17:14)

Jennifer's prayer: Lord, create in my descendants a hunger and craving for righteousness, a hunger that only You can satisfy (Matthew 5:6). Fill their lives so completely that they discover satisfaction only in You. Fulfill your promise in their lives that "I will satisfy the priests with abundance, and my people will be filled with my bounty, declares the Lord." (Jeremiah 31:14) Jennifer Kennedy Dean

My prayer: Father, my heart is so full of You and Your love. Celebrating Your birth with my family today was so wonderful. I had prayed sometime back that you would make it the most special and meaningful Christmas ever. You answered my prayer beyond my wildest dreams. How I thank you O Lord.

May the wealth that I store up for my children be a trust fund of faithful prayers for them. I can give them no greater heritage than this. I pray my descendants will hunger for You and You alone, for You are the only One Who can fill, Who can satisfy.

I Stand in Awe of You

Day 26

"He revered me and stood in awe of my name. True instruction was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness and turned many from sin." ~Malachi 2:5,6

Jennifer's prayer: "Let these words, used to describe Levi, be true also of my descendants."~Jennifer Kennedy Dean

My prayer:  "O Lord, I pray that all of my descendants will stand in awe of your name.  I pray that they will be so filled with You and Your knowledge that when they open their mouths nothing but truth will follow.  I pray that they will walk in peace and righteousness and many will be encouraged to live for You through the strength of their testimonies."

Father, from the bottom of my heart I thank You that once again we are privileged and blessed to have all of our descendants here celebrating Your birth.  We do not deserve all the goodness that You have lavished us with this year but we humbly bow before You and give You sincere thanks.

For all of those who will not be celebrating with all their family, especially the service men and women giving of themselves so unselfishly, I offer a prayer that You would help them through the holidays.  Bring them home safely to their family members so anxiously awaiting their arrival.  Give them courage to come boldly before Your throne and pray for the wisdom, grace, and fortitude they need to make it successfully through the holidays--to be able to celebrate Your birth even though their hearts are heavy with separation

Bless our nation, Father.  I pray that we, as a nation, would turn back to You--that You would bless us with a mighty revival that would stir us to the core.

As you came that blessed night so long ago, we ask with the Spirit that You come again--please Lord God hasten the return of Your Son to us.  Even so, come Lord Jesus!

When Empty Is Full

Day 25

"May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children. May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us--yes, establish the work of our hands."

Jennifer's prayer: "Lord, make my life your theater--a stage upon which You perform. Through my life may Your splendor be shown to my descendants."~Jennifer Kennedy Dean

My prayer: Lord, today is the day we celebrate the incredible work of Your hands, of Your Spirit so long ago--the birth of our precious Lord Jesus. You have shown us incredible deeds, O Father, You have made known Your splendor to us and to our children. How we thank You and give You praise for this marvelous work.

As the work of Your hands was so incredibly made known through the circumstances of our Lord's birth, may the work of our hands be established. Let us build our work, our lives, our faith upon You, upon the Solid Rock, of which there is utter and total faithfulness, not even a shadow of turning.

Because the manger and the cross were filled and then emptied, our hearts are filled to overflowing with the knowledge that our salvation was accomplished through them.

Please fill all of my descendants with Your unspeakable gift, your Son, Jesus Christ. Humbly we thank You for what our hearts embrace today.

If you don't have time for anything else this Christmas, I pray that you will watch this really short video written, acted and produced by children. You will not be disappointed.

Christmas Eve Candlelight Service

The church was packed in spite of the fact it was raining and in the thirties--

The choir lifts their candles high in honor of our Savior!

My son, Michael and his three daughters--

my beautiful daughter-in-law, Traci, sings Silent Night, Holy Night along with many others--

but I have to say--as special as all of that was--there was one thing that happened at the start of the service that was totally incredible--four precious people were baptized--three from China--
I have included the video of a Chinese lady who had never seen anyone baptized before tonight.  The three who went in front of her were the first she had ever seen.  Be blessed as you watch this short video.

It doesn't get any better than this unless we would have baptized more.  As the pastor said, "We could have baptized them and then gone home and our hearts would have been full."  Praise God from Whom all good things come.

Written In Red

For an explanation of the posts this month, please go here.

Day 24

"I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people." Jeremiah 31:33

Jennifer's prayer: "I pray that Your law will be encoded in the spiritual DNA of my descendants. May Your law become their instinctual and spontaneous way of living, more natural to them than unrighteousness."~Jennifer Kennedy Dean

My prayer: "O Father, this is such an awesome verse. I ask that you put Your law in the minds of my descendants and please write it on their hearts. I pray that all of them will be Your people and serve you gladly and unconditionally.

Father, on this Christmas Eve when we celebrate the nearness of Your long awaited arrival, I pray that my heart and the hearts of my children and grandchildren will be prepared for your sweet coming. May the star that shone so brightly on that distant night bring light to our hearts and our lives, our thoughts and our deeds.

I pray this Christmas will be holy in our family. That the true hush of Your Holy Spirit who rested weighty upon Mary's womb with Your Only Begotten, will rest heavy on our hearts and impregnate us with a burden for the salvation of the world. May we go boldly forth proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ, the One and Only Answer to the sin of our souls."

All Nature Speaks His Language

For an explanation of the posts this month, please go here.

Day 23

"May the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer." Psalm 19:14

Jennifer's prayer: "Lord, work mightily in the deep places in the lives of my descendants, creating in them thoughts and ideas and desires that match Yours. Let their hearts be so full of Your living Word that when they speak from the overflow of their hearts (Luke 6:45), the words of their mouths will be the words from Your mouth." (John 14:24)~Jennifer Kennedy Dean

My prayer: "Lord, I pray that the truth of Psalm 19 will become a reality to each of my descendants. Your law is perfect, it is radiant light, it is sweeter than honey from the comb, it will guard us and keep us on the right path if we listen and respond wisely to Your Word. I pray that every one of my descendants will love Your law with an abiding love."

Because it is one of my favorites, I am posting the whole chapter--to me one of the most beautifully penned in the Bible--

The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they reveal knowledge.

They have no speech, they use no words;
no sound is heard from them.

Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.

In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
like a champion rejoicing to run his course.

It rises at one end of the heavens
and makes its circuit to the other;
nothing is deprived of its warmth.

The law of the LORD is perfect,
refreshing the soul.

The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy,
making wise the simple.

The precepts of the LORD are right,
giving joy to the heart.

The commands of the LORD are radiant,
giving light to the eyes.

The fear of the LORD is pure,
enduring forever.

The decrees of the LORD are firm,
and all of them are righteous.

They are more precious than gold,
than much pure gold;

they are sweeter than honey,
than honey from the honeycomb.

By them your servant is warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.

But who can discern their own errors?
Forgive my hidden faults.

Keep your servant also from willful sins;
may they not rule over me.

Then I will be blameless,
innocent of great transgression.

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart
be pleasing in your sight,
LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Day 22

"Let Salvation spring up, let righteousness grow with it." Isaiah 45:8
Jennifer's prayer: "May every one of my descendants come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ as his or her Lord and Savior. May their lives be righteous because of You.~Jennifer Kennedy Dean

My prayer:  "Lord, You know from the time my babies were first born I have prayed for their salvation.  I humbly come before You again now asking that your Holy Spirit bring them to a place of conviction and choice.  I pray that they would follow Your Spirit's leading because it is Your desire that we all would come to repentance and salvation.

You paid the price for all of us.  None are exempt.  How we thank you for Your all-encompassing love.  I cannot fathom or truly understand it, but  as an act of my free will and using the faith as a mustard see that You have given to all, I accept Your love, Your grace, Your salvation, Your righteousness.  Lord, there is no way that I nor any member of my family can be righteous apart from You.

I pray that each one of my descendants would exercise their free will to accept You as Lord and Savior.  I pray that You would impart Your righteousness to each of them.

Thank You for Your faithfulness, O Lord.  I love You."

"I have heard that the spirit of the gods is in you and that you have insight, intelligence and outstanding wisdom." Daniel 5:14,15

Jennifer's prayer: "Lord, I pray that my descendants will be like Daniel. May You be so clearly evident in their lives that unbelievers come to them to discover their secret. Grant them insight, intelligence, and wisdom." Jennifer Kennedy Dean

My prayer:  "Lord, we know that Daniel was filled with the Spirit of the One True and Living God--You!  That is why even at a young age, his reputation was known far and wide.  I pray that my family, my children, my grandchildren, my descendants will have reputations that uphold Your Character--that never bring reproach upon Your Name but always brings glory and honor to You.  You are due that, Father, and we gladly fall on our knees at Your feet and give you all the praise in Jesus Name.  We worship You and only You."

Glorious Inheritance!

For an explanation of the posts this month, please go here.

Day 20
"I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom, and revelation so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe." Ephesians 1:17-19

Jennifer's prayer: "May my descendants have clear spiritual vision to know and understand Your kingsom. Reveal Yourself to them so that they may know You in Your fulness."-Jennifer Kennedy Dean

My prayer: "I pray for my family, my children, my grandchildren, my descendants today that you will give them the Spirit of wisdom and revelation.  Oh God, that they may know you better, that they may know and understand the incredible hope that you have called us to and that they would truly understand what a meaningful inheritance is.  Lord, I don't have much earthly goods to leave them, but I pray that I leave them with an incorruptible inheritance--one that moths and rust and time cannot decay--the inheritance of a mother's love who loves You and them more than mere mortal words can describe. "

Day 19

"Direct my footsteps according to your word, let no sin rule over me. Redeem me from the opprssion of men, that I may obey your precepts. Make your face shine upon your servant and teach me your decrees." Psalm 119:133-135

Jennifer's prayer: "Set my descendants free from any sinful inclination that may have been passed down through generations. May they live in the freedom that Jesus Christ offers.~Jennifer Kennedy Dean

My prayer:  Lord, I pray that you will be merciful to my family, to my descendants.  I pray that any familial strongholds or tendencies that satan would try to use in their lives, would be broken, even today.  Your mercy and grace for our sinful ways is desired more than riches or gold.

Your scriptures declare that we have been set free for freedom's sake (Gal. 5:1).  Thank you, Father, that you want us to be free, walk freely, think freely.  We know that freedom only comes from truth and You said that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.  We pray now that You will fill us and our descendants with Your Truth.

Thank you for that blessed night, so long ago, when Truth was declared by hosts in the highest heavens--the night our Savior was born.  Prepare our hearts for His arrival.

Hope In Your Word

For an explanation of the posts this month, please go here.

Day 18

"May those who fear you rejoice when they see me, for I have put my hope in your word." Psalm 119:74

Jennifer's prayer:  Train my descendants in Your ways, Lord. Teach them early to put their hope in You. Give them experiences that prove that You are true to Your Word. Let them testify, "Your promises have been thoroughly tested, and your servant loves them." Psalm 119:40~Jennifer Kennedy Dean
My prayer:  Father, you see each member of my family today, where they are in relation to You and Your Word.  I pray that Your precious Holy Spirit would pray for them--for He knows Your will for their lives-words and thoughts that I do not know, but You know--you know what each one of them needs today.  I pray that you will meet each one at the point of their need and fill them with the Hope of Your Word--Jesus Christ.

I pray today that you would work in each of their hearts and that our Christmas this year would truly be filled with thoughts of You and Your provision for us when in that lowly stable so long ago you brought forth Your only begotten Son--the Son who would give His life for the salvation of Your people.  Prepare our hearts, O Lord.

Jennifer's prayer: "Teach my descendants to commit fully their lives to You--taking every thought captive to the obedience of Jesus Christ II Corinthians 10:5--so that their plans will reflect Your will, 'and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand'." Isaiah 53:10 -Jennifer Kennedy Dean

My prayer:  Lord, I realize today that if everything we do is not totally commited to you, our efforts, in the long run, are futile.  I pray that my children, grandchildren and all those descendants who will follow will always commit their ways, their doings, their hearts, their thoughts, their lives, to You.  I pray they will be successful in the eyes of Your Spirit, in the light of eternity, and in ministry to others.

"But they could not stand up against his wisdom or the spirit by whom he spoke." Acts 6:10

Jennifer's prayer: "Lord, may my descendants be so genuinely full of Your Spirit that You will speak through them."~Jennifer Kennedy Dean
My prayer: "Lord, You have promised us that when we are filled with Your Spirit we will be filled with the right words to say, responses of wisdom. I pray that my descendants will always be open to the filling of Your Spirit, empowering them to walk daily in the wisdom that You want to give those who ask. The Centerpiece

For an explanation of the posts this month, please go here.

Day 14

"Keep me from deceitful ways; be gracious to me through your law. I have chosen the way of truth; I have set my heart on your laws." Psalm 119:29-30

Jennifer's prayer:  "Cause my descendants to set their hearts on Your laws and choose Your way. Let deceitfulness of any kind be foreign to them. May Your grace be the centerpiece of their lives."~Jennifer Kennedy Dean

My prayer:  "O Lord, as I was thinking about this verse and what it says about your law and then thinking about Jennifer's prayer and how she prayed that Your grace would be the centerpiece of her descendant's lives, I couldn't help but think back to my wedding day.

I was so young and naive--I knew I wanted to carry Your law (the Bible as the base to my wedding bouquet) but didn't really have a clue as to the magnitude of what that signified.

Now after forty-five years of marriage and many life experiences, I know that if not for Your grace being the centerpiece of our lives, there is no telling where we would be or what we would be doing.

So it is with wholehearted agreement that I can pray with Jennifer--'May Your sweet, sweet faithful, eternal, everlasting, life-saving grace be the centerpiece of the lives of all my descendants."

Father, keep me, and them from all deceitful ways and let us always choose the path of truth."

A Steadfast Heart

For an explanation of the posts this month, please go here.

Day 13

"My heart is steadfast, O God." Psalm 108:1

Jennifer's prayer: "Give my descendants steadfast hearts, anchored in You, unshakeable and immovable. May my descendants always present a solid phalanx in the army of the Lord."~Jennifer Kennedy Dean

My prayer: "Father, we have prayed many prayers for our descendants over the past few days, but I have to say, other than a prayer for the salvation of all of them, I guess this is the prayer that resonates in my heart for them more than any other--a steadfast heart, immovable, unshakeable, full of faithfulness to You. Humbly I pray that You would grant this, O Lord."
